The Bobcat Fire burned roughly 115,997 acres in the Angeles National Forest between September and November of 2020, triggering evacuation warnings in nearby Arcadia, Pasadena, and Altadena and a documented regional air-quality event across the San Gabriel Valley. San Gabriel itself is flat and dense, not a foothill community, and did not burn or lose structures in that event, but the smoke it produced still traveled into homes across the valley floor.
What That Kind of Smoke Does With No Flame Involved
Ash carried on the wind can settle on roofs, patios, and vehicles, and fine smoke particles work their way indoors through vents, gaps, and the HVAC system. A San Gabriel home can end up with a lingering smoky smell and a layer of ash outside even though nothing on the property ever caught fire.
Why the Cleanup Process Differs
Wildfire-smoke cleanup typically starts outside, clearing ash from roofs and exterior surfaces before it gets tracked indoors or washed into gutters. Inside, HEPA filtration and deodorization address the lingering odor, and if smoke recirculated through the ducts, the forced-air system usually needs its own separate cleaning pass, especially given how many San Gabriel homes run central air through the warmer months.
